Welcome to QAW middle school!
At QAW we follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP), which we have recently been accepted as a candidate school. This curriculum is designed to meet the educational requirements of students aged 11 to 16 year olds (grades 6-10).
The MYP is a curriculum that places emphasis on developing skills, attitudes, understanding, concepts and knowledge. There are 3 Fundamental Concepts in the MYP, representing the philosophy of international education:
* Holistic Learning - the curriculum caters to the development of the whole person
* Communication - promotes international-mindedness
* Intercultural Awareness -encourages open and effective communication
Research has confirmed that these fundamental concepts provide a strong foundation for teaching and learning (Principles into Practice 2015). Students today encounter a vast array of choices in a multifaceted and rapidly changing world. Focusing on higher-order thinking skills gives students more opportunities to adapt and to make sound judgments in life.
Importance used to be placed on how much a student knew and could learn. These days it is recognized that knowledge, whilst still important, does not alone provide a student the skills to enter into today’s global workforce.
Students predominantly have their own learning styles, strengths and limitations. At QAW we encourage our students to become active and lifelong learners. The IB programme addresses not only cognitive development but also students’ social, emotional and physical wellbeing. The aim of the program therefore, is to develop ‘internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet help create a better and more peaceful world ‘(IBO 2013).
At QAW we require IB learners to strive to become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.

The MYP model (fig 2) places the learner at its center and stresses educating the whole person. It is driven by inquiry based learning and places importance on making connections between disciplines. MYP teachers at QAW plan units of work and regularly assess students using an array of assessment methods under the guidance of the MYP coordinator. As the school expands and there is growth in numbers, teachers will collaboratively work together in order to achieve vertical and horizontal alignment.
