Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
QAW follows a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) model. PBIS is a prevention model, which means we try to help the students solve their own problems and solve small problems before they become big problems. We use strategies that are proven to help students. We use data to make decisions about what help will help our students the most.
We use positive recognition and rewards to help the students make good choices. The behavior expectations at QAW are called the 3 Bs: Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful. We teach and reinforce these expectations by:
- Showing students exactly what it looks like to be safe, responsible and respectful in all the different areas around the school.
- Generous quantities of positive adult/teacher attention. At QAW Bee Tickets and Bee Bucks are used to reinforce students for demonstrating positive behaviors.
- Predictable consequences are seen as an opportunity for the student to learn from his or her mistakes and to accept responsibility for the choices that he or she made.
Parent Involvement in School-wide PBIS
Strategies for encouraging parent support of PBIS include:
- Parent orientation on the school’s behavior expectations and system of behavior support through open house, Parent Teacher Association, and other parent meetings.
- Ongoing posting of the school behavior expectations and PBIS strategies in a school newsletter.
- Daily or weekly communication between home and school for individual students.
