About Secondary School
Middle Years Programme
- The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.
- The MYP is a five-year program, which can be implemented in a partnership between schools or several abbreviated (two, three, or four years) formats. Students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP).
- The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.
- MYP students in their final year explore an area of personal interest over an extended period. It provides them with the opportunity to consolidate their learning and develop essential skills they’ll need in both further education and life beyond the classroom. It also helps them develop the confidence to become principled, lifelong learners.
- In the program’s final year, students sit for the MYP eAssessment, which provides IB-validated grades based on examinations and course work. Students who undertake external assessment are eligible for MYP course results and the IB MYP Certificate.
Diploma Programme
- The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year (Grades 11 and 12, or ages 16-19) international curriculum that allows students to fulfill the requirements for university entrance of their national or state education systems. Internationally mobile students can transfer into the IB Diploma Programme from other IB World Schools, as well as from other school systems.
- The IBDP comprises subject groups, and the DP core comprises the theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS), and the extended essay.
- Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research, and undertake a project that often involves community service.
Academic Resources
Students have an access to a variety of resources that support the academic programs within our school.
Online Academic Resources:
- MangeBac: MangeBac is an online platform that supports student learning. Teachers and coordinators use it for planning, attendance, marking, and reporting. Students use it to access their online lessons and submit coursework. In addition, parents have access to the Parent Portal, allowing them to monitor academic progress.
- InThinking: An online resource used in the Diploma Programme to support student learning. The website supports planning, practice, and assessments in the Diploma Programme.
- Kognity: An online resource used in the Diploma Programme to support student learning. The website provides online textbooks. In addition, teachers and students have access to readings and quizzes to check for understanding.
- IB Question Bank: A resource for Diploma Programme teachers. This resource is used to design formative and summative assessments that prepare students for external exams.
Experiential Learning & Outreach
All students in Grade 9 are expected to take part in the work experience programme as part of their work-related learning education. The aim is to provide an ‘experience of work’ rather than specific job training.
Students get the opportunity to work with an employer for a short, unpaid period of time to learn more about different industries. They can observe and work alongside people as they go about their daily tasks and experience the disciplines of the workplace, such as attendance, time-keeping, regulations and the importance of teamwork, particularly in a job or area of work that they might be interested in pursuing in the future.
Students get an insight into what employers look for when recruiting and how the subjects they study in school link to certain jobs. It provokes thought about careers that had not been considered before and the skills and grades needed to plan for the future.
Details of a full orientation program will be provided to parents and students at the start of grade 9.
Qatar Academy – Al Wakra began offering this exciting and enriching experience for our students in 2019, The Global exchange program was launched.
QAW and Qatar Foundation International worked together to provide a truly memorable experience for our students. With regular virtual exchanges, students are able to learn, discover and explore the lives and country of their buddy.
The buddies are then invited over to Qatar. The students are able to explore all that Qatar has to offer, from Al Shaqab equestrian centre, Al Jazeera TV Network, Souq Waqif and the numerous Museums.
