Student Services
Counseling Services
Primary School:
The PYP counseling department at QAW offers proactive and preventative services to support each student’s social and emotional development. The QAW PYP counseling program aims to provide students with the tools, ideas, and skills necessary to thrive in school and as community members. Reactive services, such as crisis management, are also available in emergencies. In addition, collaboration among the school counselor, teachers, parents, and students is emphasized to foster student success. Services provided by the counselor include In-class guidance lessons (topics ranging from friendship, self-confidence, social skills, conflict management skills, bullying, and mindfulness), small group counseling, individual counseling sessions, parent workshops, and professional development for teachers on social/emotional topics.
Secondary School:
The MYP/DP emotional and social counselor help students develop the academic and social skills needed to succeed personally and professionally. In addition, they help students to overcome obstacles that may inhibit their learning.
The counselor works in partnership and collaboration with parents, teachers, principals, and medical professionals to identify and address these problems.
The focus of this year has been on helping students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through classroom guidance lessons (bullying, anxiety, coping skills, mindfulness, etc.) and encouraging students’ initiatives and agency (such as Cancer Awareness Month).
Learning Support
QAW recognizes that all students learn through different modalities and at different rates. Learning Support (LS) services at QAW are designed to address the individual strengths and needs of each child and maximize students’ learning potential. We have Arabic and English speaking staff in the LS department in order to facilitate the needs of students learning in a dual immersion language program. The LS team provides support in academics, social emotional development and health. In addition to providing direct student services, LS staff provides professional development and resources to all staff as well as parents.
